LCL Sea Freight: Pricing on Chargeable Volume, Not Guesswork
How LCL sea freight pricing really works β chargeable volume, stackability, and consolidation cutoffs β and how our own weekly EU and twice-weekly NA consolidation schedules keep the number stable.
LCL pricing punishes buyers who guess their volume
LCL sea freight is billed on chargeable volume or weight, whichever the consolidator applies. The charge is easy to budget when your cargo is stable and painful when it is not: one extra carton layer, a non-stackable crate, or an overstated volume estimate can move the number on the same weekly sailing. For a B2B buyer the impact is real β landed cost per unit drifts, destination charges arrive that were never in the comparison, and consolidation delays hold inventory at origin.
How our consolidation solves this
We run our own consolidation schedules instead of selling whatever space is left on someone else's: weekly LCL consolidation from Shenzhen, Yiwu, and Ningbo to Hamburg, Rotterdam, and Felixstowe with 28-35 day transit, and twice-weekly consolidation to major North American ports with bonded warehousing and CIQ packing support. Because the CFS stations are ours, the quote states how your cargo is handled, stacked, and measured before it is priced β not after.
What that is worth to you: a quote you can compare line-for-line, chargeable volume settled from packed dimensions you control, and delivery options (port-to-port or door-to-door) written into the same document. Full lane details are on the LCL Consolidation Service to Europe and the LCL Consolidation Service to North America.
Client cases
Case 1 β Homeware brand, United Kingdom
Who and what: a UK homeware brand shipping 8-15 pallets per order from Yiwu to Felixstowe by weekly LCL.
Problem before: per-shipment spot quotes with unpredictable destination charges; finance could not reconcile landed cost across orders.
Result now: chargeable volume settled from packed dimensions before booking; the brand reports landed-cost variance per order cut to a single low-single-digit percentage band and quotes valid per sailing week.
Where the numbers come from: the brand's landed-cost reconciliation against CFS measurement records for each consolidation.
Case 2 β Auto parts distributor, United States
Who and what: a US auto-parts distributor moving mid-sized crates from Ningbo to Los Angeles twice monthly on the twice-weekly NA consolidation.
Problem before: crates were priced as non-stackable on some shipments and stackable on others, and the same crate moved for two different rates.
Result now: stackability declared once at the CFS with measurement photos attached; the distributor reports re-quote disputes at destination dropped to zero across the cooperation.
Where the numbers come from: CFS measurement records and the distributor's destination-charge dispute log.
Case 3 β Electronics accessory retailer, Spain
Who and what: a Spanish retailer consolidating multi-supplier cartons from Shenzhen to Hamburg, including bonded storage before sailing.
Problem before: goods from three suppliers arrived at different times and each early shipment sailed alone, paying solo volume rates.
Result now: suppliers consolidate into one bonded warehouse entry; the retailer reports sailing coverage improved from roughly half to nearly all orders per weekly cutoff and LCL volume per sailing rose accordingly.
Where the numbers come from: warehouse inbound records matched against the sailing manifest per week.
Client reviews

We ship replenishment pallets from our Yiwu buying office to our UK DC every week.
The measurement sheet now arrives before the invoice does, which ended the chargeable-volume arguments I used to have every month; peak-season sailing gaps still need planning around.
Verifiable result: 40+ consecutive weekly LCL bookings over 11 months with zero measurement disputes (shipping-log count).
Source type: supply chain manager, UK homeware brand (email record).

We buy LCL through our US import desk under annual rate reviews.
Twice-weekly consolidation keeps our replenishment cadence predictable and the CIQ packing support is genuinely useful; I would prefer faster document release after discharge.
Verifiable result: 3 years of cooperation, 70+ shipments, zero destination re-quote disputes (import-desk records).
Source type: import operations lead, US auto-parts distributor (annual review file).

We consolidate three Chinese suppliers into one LCL entry for our Hamburg warehouse.
Bonded consolidation before sailing noticeably raised our sailing coverage; documentation for one supplier took two cycles to standardize.
Verifiable result: sailing coverage moved from ~55% to ~95% of orders per weekly cutoff (warehouse inbound records).
Source type: retail logistics coordinator, Spain (consolidation manifest archive).
Compliance and documentation credentials
Every consolidation is documented end to end: CFS measurement records with cargo photos, bonded warehousing entries where storage is used, CIQ packing support, and export declarations prepared by our in-house customs team. Licences and carrier agreements that apply to your lane are provided with the quotation on request; cargo-specific requirements such as restricted commodities are confirmed before booking rather than discovered at the terminal.

Pain-point FAQ
Why did my LCL chargeable volume change after booking?
Chargeable volume is set by the consolidator's measurement, not the commercial invoice. When measurement is taken at our own CFS with photos attached, the figure is fixed before the price is issued β ask for the measurement basis in writing.
Is non-stackable cargo much more expensive?
Non-stackable cargo consumes more consolidation space, so it prices higher. Declare stackability early with packing details; the quote will state how your cargo is handled.
What is included in the destination charges?
Destination charges cover import handling and release at the destination CFS; whether delivery to door is included depends on the term you book. Confirm port-to-port versus door-to-door before comparing totals.
How does bonded warehousing fit into LCL?
Bonded storage lets multi-supplier cargo consolidate before export without duty exposure at origin. See the Bonded Warehousing and Distribution Service for the storage scope.
LCL or FCL β settle it with three questions
Open the branch that matches your shipment. Each branch ends with the exact inputs our quote needs.
My cargo fills most of a 20ft or 40ft container
That is FCL territory β priced per container, not per cubic meter. See the FCL Ocean Freight China to Europe or FCL Ocean Freight China to North America service and send container size, commodity, and gross weight.
My cargo is a few pallets or cartons
That is LCL. Send packed dimensions of every piece, gross weight, and whether the cargo can be stacked. Our consolidations price on chargeable volume or weight, whichever applies to your routing.
My suppliers ship at different times
Use bonded consolidation: suppliers deliver into our Shenzhen, Shanghai, or Ningbo bonded warehouse, and we sail one consolidated entry per weekly cutoff. Send supplier names, ready dates, and the destination port.
My departure date is fixed
State the exact cutoff you must make. Weekly EU consolidations sail from Shenzhen, Yiwu, and Ningbo to Hamburg, Rotterdam, and Felixstowe; NA consolidations run twice weekly. The quote will confirm which cutoff your cargo meets.
