Ocean Freight Quote: How to Read an FCL and LCL Rate Sheet
A buyer's guide to reading an ocean freight quote line by line: base rate, surcharges, terminal handling, and what to confirm before you compare two forwarders.
What an ocean freight quote actually contains
An ocean freight quote is a priced list of the charges that move one shipment from a named origin to a named destination. Two forwarders can quote the same container and still differ by hundreds of dollars, because the base ocean rate is only one line. Before you compare offers, separate the quote into four groups: the ocean base rate, origin charges, destination charges, and surcharges that depend on the cargo itself.
| Line group | What it covers | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean base rate | Port-to-port carriage of the container | Whether the rate is per container or per chargeable weight |
| Origin charges | Export handling, loading, documentation | Which charges are fixed and which follow actual weight or volume |
| Destination charges | Import handling, release, delivery | Whether the quote is port-to-port or door-to-door |
| Cargo-dependent surcharges | Hazardous, temperature-controlled, or oversized handling | Whether your cargo triggers any of them |
FCL and LCL are priced on different units
Full container load shipments are quoted per container, so the price does not move with the cargo weight until you approach the container limit. Less than container load shipments are quoted per chargeable weight or per cubic meter, whichever the carrier applies, so the same pallet can price differently depending on how it is packed. When you request an ocean freight quote, state the container size for FCL or the exact dimensions and gross weight for LCL, and say whether the cargo can be stacked.
Questions that change the number
- Is the quote port-to-port or door-to-door?
- Which surcharges are already included and which are billed at cost?
- Is the rate valid for a fixed sailing date or for a validity window?
- What documentation is included in the price?
How to compare two quotes fairly
Put both quotes into the same scope before comparing totals. If one is port-to-port and the other includes inland delivery, the totals are not comparable. Ask each forwarder to confirm the same origin, the same destination, the same container or volume, and the same validity window. Where a charge is described as billed at cost, ask for the basis so you can estimate it.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an ocean freight quote usually valid?
Validity is set by the forwarder and the carrier, and it is stated on the quote itself. Ask for the validity window in writing rather than assuming a standard period.
Can I get a quote without a confirmed sailing date?
Yes. A quote can be issued against a planned departure window. Confirm with the forwarder how the rate is treated if the sailing moves outside that window.
Why does the same route price differently between forwarders?
Carrier allocation, consolidation schedules, and which charges each forwarder bundles into the total all affect the number. Compare the line items, not only the total.
Request a quote for your shipment
To review your requirement, send the origin and destination, the container size or cargo dimensions and gross weight, the commodity, and your target departure window. These details let the team check routing and prepare a quotation for your shipment.
Decide before you request: FCL or LCL
Use this checklist to settle the two choices that change an ocean freight quote most.
| Your situation | Typical fit | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo fills most of a 20 ft or 40 ft container | FCL | Container size, commodity, gross weight |
| Cargo is a few pallets or cartons | LCL | Dimensions, gross weight, stackable or not |
| Departure date is flexible | Either | Earliest and latest acceptable departure |
| Departure date is fixed | Either | Exact required sailing window |
