Buyer Pain Points Addressed
Hospitality buyers and corporate reception furnishing contractors often need a sofa set that communicates cultural prestige without the footprint of a 10-seat banqueting configuration. Standard commercial furniture lacks the carving detail and solid wood joinery that Asian-themed interior design projects demand. This six-piece reception set fills the gap between compact residential sets and oversized banqueting halls.
The set is configured for hotel lobbies, corporate reception areas, and luxury retail showrooms. The central three-seat sofa measures 195 cm, flanked by two single armchairs and accompanied by three matching tables. The phoenix-and-peony backrest carving is executed entirely by hand in our Xianyou workshop.
Six-Piece Configuration
- 1 three-seat central sofa (195 cm length, 66 cm depth, 94 cm backrest height)
- 2 single-seat armchairs (66 cm width each)
- 1 matching coffee table (115 x 60 cm)
- 2 matching end tables (48 x 48 cm each)
For buyers furnishing L-shaped reception areas, the two armchairs can be angled independently from the central sofa. Mention the room layout when requesting a quotation so we can confirm the configuration works for your space.

Phoenix-and-Peony Backrest Carving
The backrest panel on each seating piece features a phoenix flying among peony blossoms, a classical Chinese motif symbolizing beauty and nobility. The carving sequence involves three steps: the phoenix body is outlined first in shallow relief at 2 mm depth, the peony blossoms are carved in medium relief at 4 mm, and the background is recessed to create visual depth. Each backrest panel requires approximately 35 carving hours. The carver uses chisels from 2 mm to 14 mm width, and the phoenix tail feathers are the most technically demanding element because they require continuous flowing cuts along the grain.
Manufacturing Workflow
This set follows a five-stage production sequence with a distinct carving-intensive workflow:
- Stage 1 - Timber Heartwood Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for heartwood ratio. Only boards with a heartwood percentage exceeding 80 percent proceed to this product line, since heartwood holds carving detail more cleanly than sapwood.
- Stage 2 - Kiln Conditioning: Selected timber is kiln-dried to below 14 percent moisture content over a 4-week cycle with gradual temperature ramping to avoid case-hardening. A 48-hour equalization period follows.
- Stage 3 - Frame Joinery: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 18 mm tenon depth on seat rails and 16 mm on backrest stiles. Bamboo dowel pins are fitted dry before glue application. Corner blocks are installed at every right-angle intersection.
- Stage 4 - Three-Step Relief Carving: Phoenix-and-peony panels are carved in three depth stages after frame assembly. The carver works from a reference drawing but adjusts feather flow and blossom placement to the grain of each board.
- Stage 5 - Eight-Coat Lacquer Finishing: Eight coats of raw lacquer are applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a deep satin sheen that highlights the carving relief.
Quality Inspection
- Heartwood Ratio Verification: Each board is visually inspected for sapwood percentage. Boards exceeding 20 percent sapwood are diverted to other product lines.
- Joint Stress Test: Assembled frames are loaded with 120 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.
- Carving Relief Depth Check: The three-step relief depths (2 mm, 4 mm, recessed background) are verified with a depth gauge at five points per panel.
- Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per piece. Readings outside 8 to 14 percent require re-conditioning.
- Finish Uniformity: The lacquer surface is inspected under 5000K LED lighting. Colour consistency across the six pieces is verified against a reference panel.
