Product Detail
Buyer Pain Points Addressed
Buyers furnishing grand residential living rooms, embassy reception halls, or large boutique hotel lobbies need a sofa set that fills a 40 to 60 square metre space without looking sparse. Standard seven-piece sets leave visual gaps in rooms of this scale, while 10-seat banqueting sets are too formal for a living room context. This nine-piece grand living room set is engineered for that intermediate scale.
The set includes a central three-seat sofa, two two-seat side sofas, two single armchairs, a coffee table, two end tables, and a console table. The backrest panels feature the classic Ming open-slat pattern with carved chrysanthemum medallions at the rail centres, a motif symbolizing longevity and autumn harvest.
Nine-Piece Configuration
- 1 three-seat central sofa (205 cm length, 70 cm depth, 95 cm backrest height)
- 2 two-seat side sofas (150 cm each)
- 2 single-seat armchairs (70 cm width each)
- 1 matching coffee table (130 x 70 cm)
- 2 matching end tables (50 x 50 cm each)
- 1 matching console table (120 x 40 cm)
The console table is designed to sit against a wall or behind the central sofa as a sofa table. Buyers can request a modified configuration substituting the console for a third end table if the room layout does not accommodate a wall-positioned piece.

Ming Open-Slat with Chrysanthemum Medallion
The backrest design combines the understated Ming open-slat pattern with carved chrysanthemum medallions at the centre of the top rail. The open slats provide the clean line work that Ming-style collectors expect, while the chrysanthemum medallions add a focal carving element without the visual density of full-panel relief carving. Each medallion takes approximately 12 carving hours and is cut in shallow relief at 1.5 to 3 mm depth using chisels from 3 mm to 8 mm width.
Production Process
This set follows a six-stage manufacturing sequence optimized for large multi-piece configurations:
- Stage 1 - Batch Timber Allocation: A single timber batch is allocated to each nine-piece set to ensure colour and grain consistency across all pieces. The batch is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content with a 48-hour equalization period.
- Stage 2 - Component Grain Matching: Backrest slats and medallion panels are selected for boards with straight grain orientation. Slats are cut to final width on a table saw, then hand-fitted to the rail mortises.
- Stage 3 - Joinery Cutting: Mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to 18 mm tenon depth on seat rails, 16 mm on backrest stiles, and 20 mm on the console table frame. All joints are fitted dry before glue application.
- Stage 4 - Frame Assembly: Frames are assembled in sequence: central sofa first, then side sofas, then armchairs, then tables. This assembly order allows the carver to position each piece relative to the central sofa and verify visual consistency.
- Stage 5 - Medallion Carving: Chrysanthemum medallions are carved after frame assembly. The carver works from a template but adjusts petal depth to the grain of each rail board.
- Stage 6 - Seven-Coat Lacquer Application: Seven coats of raw lacquer are applied by hand, each cured for 24 hours and hand-rubbed with pumice stone. The final coat achieves a satin sheen.
Quality Inspection
- Batch Consistency Check: Colour and grain of all nine pieces are compared against the central sofa as reference. Pieces showing visible deviation are re-finished or re-selected.
- Joint Lateral Play Test: 15 kg of horizontal force is applied to each mortise-and-tenon connection. Any joint showing visible movement is re-fitted.
- Slat Fit Check: Each open-slat is grip-tested by hand. A slat removable with less than 5 kg of pull force is re-fitted.
- Medallion Depth Verification: Carving depth is checked with a depth gauge at four points per medallion. Depths outside 1.5 to 3 mm are re-carved.
- Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per piece. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent trigger re-conditioning.
- Finish Inspection: Surface inspected under 5000K LED lighting at 30 cm distance. Defects reworked before packing.
