Buyer Pain Points Addressed
Wholesale buyers sourcing 10-seat dining sets for hospitality projects or large residential clients frequently report three issues: rectangular tables that warp along the long axis after shipment, chair joints that loosen under commercial sitting loads, and finishes that do not meet food-contact safety standards. This set is engineered to resolve all three.
The tabletop is built from Siamese rosewood (Dalbergia cochinchinensis) boards selected for straight grain orientation along the 220 cm length, which minimizes longitudinal warping. The table apron uses a four-rail mortise-and-tenon frame that distributes sitting load to all four legs rather than concentrating it at the centre. Chair frames are assembled with mortise-and-tenon joints at the seat rail to back-post junction, reinforced with bamboo dowel pins. The glossy lacquer topcoat meets FDA 21 CFR 175.300 for repeated food contact.
Table and Chair Configuration
The set includes one rectangular dining table and ten matching chairs. The table measures 220 cm by 100 cm by 78 cm, sized to seat ten adults comfortably with serving space in the centre. Each chair has a 45 cm seat height and a 98 cm backrest with a hand-carved auspicious cloud motif.
Dimensions at a Glance
Carved Chair Backrests
Each of the ten chair backrests features a hand-carved auspicious cloud (xiang yun) motif. The carving is done after the chair frame is assembled, so the carver can align the cloud pattern to the backrest stile orientation. A single backrest takes approximately 20 carving hours. The carver uses chisels ranging from 2 mm to 15 mm width, and the cloud curls are cut in relief to a depth of 3 to 5 mm. Minor variation in curl depth between chairs is normal and characteristic of hand work.
Production Process
This set follows a five-stage manufacturing sequence:
- Stage 1 - Timber Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are inspected for grain straightness along the long axis. Boards with diagonal grain exceeding 5 degrees from the length axis are diverted to shorter-component products. Selected boards are kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content.
- Stage 2 - Tabletop Construction: The tabletop is assembled from edge-joined boards using bamboo dowels along the join line, not metal biscuits. The joined top is planed flat and sanded to 320-grit before finishing.
- Stage 3 - Frame and Joinery: Table apron rails are connected to leg posts using 20 mm tenon-depth mortise-and-tenon joints. Chair seat rails use 18 mm tenons. All joints are fitted dry before glue application.
- Stage 4 - Carving: Chair backrest cloud motifs are carved by hand after frame assembly. The carver works from a reference template but adjusts cloud depth to the grain of each backrest board.
- Stage 5 - Lacquer Application: Five coats of glossy lacquer are applied in a dust-controlled spray booth, with sanding between each coat. The final coat is polished to a mirror gloss.
Quality Inspection
- Tabletop Flatness: A straightedge is placed across the tabletop at three points along its length. Any gap exceeding 1 mm triggers re-planing.
- Joint Load Test: Each chair is loaded with 100 kg of static weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.
- Moisture Verification: Pin-type moisture meter readings are taken at three points per piece. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent require re-conditioning.
- Finish Inspection: The lacquer surface is inspected under 5000K LED lighting at 30 cm distance. Runs, orange peel, or uncured spots are reworked.
- Carving Check: Each backrest is inspected for chisel marks indicating tool slippage. Structural damage to the backrest panel is cause for rejection.
