Longevity Character Medallion Carving

Each of the 12 chair backrests carries a carved longevity (shou) character medallion at the centre of the top rail. Manufacturing Process

• Stage 1 - Dual-Pedestal Timber Selection: Siamese rosewood boards are sorted for pedestal staves by dimensional stability. Boards with grain runout exceeding 3 degrees across the width are diverted to shorter-component products. Selected timber is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content with a 48-hour equalization period.
• Stage 2 - Tabletop Panel Assembly: The 240 cm square top is assembled from edge-joined boards using bamboo dowels along each join line. The joined panel is clamped flat for 24 hours, then planed and sanded to 320-grit. Board sequence is recorded so grain direction reads consistently across the top.
• Stage 3 - Pedestal and Stretcher Joinery: Each pedestal column is laminated from four staves with alternating grain orientation to resist twisting. The stretcher beam is connected to each pedestal using a 25 mm tenon-depth through-wedged mortise-and-tenon joint. Chair seat rails use 18 mm tenons at the back-post junction.
• Stage 4 - Medallion Carving: Shou character medallions are carved by hand on each chair backrest after frame assembly. The carver works from a calligraphic reference but adjusts stroke depth to the grain of each backrest board.
• Stage 5 - Lacquer Application: Six coats of glossy lacquer are applied in a dust-controlled spray booth. Each coat is sanded with 400-grit paper before the next. The final coat is polished to a mirror gloss meeting FDA 21 CFR 175.300 food-contact requirements.

Quality Inspection

• Tabletop Flatness: A straightedge is placed across the 240 cm span at five points. Gaps exceeding 1.5 mm trigger re-planing.
• Pedestal Load Test: The assembled table is loaded with 200 kg of distributed weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.

Export Packaging and Documentation
