Buyer Pain Points Addressed
European apartment buyers and North American breakfast-niche developers need a compact four-seat dining set that still uses solid rosewood and traditional joinery. Standard six-seat and eight-seat sets are too large for kitchen dining areas under 10 square metres. This square four-seat set is designed for that compact installation, using stools rather than chairs to reduce the seat footprint and allow the stools to tuck fully under the table when not in use.
The square tabletop measures 90 cm by 90 cm, which seats four adults comfortably with shared plates in the centre. The table stands 75 cm tall, and each stool has a 45 cm seat height. The stools feature carved lotus medallion seats, a Buddhist motif symbolizing purity and enlightenment.
Dimensions at a Glance
Lotus Medallion Stool Carving
Each stool seat features a carved lotus medallion on the top surface. The lotus is carved in shallow relief at 1.5 to 2.5 mm depth, using chisels from 3 mm to 8 mm width. A single medallion takes approximately 8 carving hours. The carving is done before the stool is assembled, since the seat surface is accessible on all sides when detached from the legs. This is the reverse of the backrest carving sequence used on chair-based sets, where carving is done after assembly.
Production Process
This set follows a three-stage manufacturing workflow optimized for compact dining configurations:
- Stage 1 - Timber Selection and Drying: Siamese rosewood boards are selected for straight grain and kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture content. Tabletop boards are edge-joined using bamboo dowels along the join line.
- Stage 2 - Component Cutting and Medallion Carving: Stool seats are cut to final dimensions, then lotus medallions are carved before leg attachment. Table apron-to-leg connections use 14 mm tenon-depth mortise-and-tenon joints. Stool legs use 12 mm tenons.
- Stage 3 - Assembly and Finishing: Table and stools are assembled after carving. Five coats of glossy lacquer are applied in a dust-controlled booth, with sanding between each coat. The final coat is polished to a mirror gloss meeting FDA 21 CFR 175.300 food-contact requirements.
Quality Inspection
- Tabletop Squareness: Diagonal measurements are compared. A difference exceeding 2 mm triggers re-cutting.
- Joint Load Test: Each stool is loaded with 100 kg static weight for 24 hours. Any joint showing visible separation is re-fitted.
- Medallion Depth Check: Carving depth verified with a depth gauge at three points per medallion. Depths outside 1.5 to 2.5 mm are re-carved.
- Moisture Audit: Three-point readings per piece. Readings outside 8 to 12 percent trigger re-conditioning.
- Finish Inspection: Surface inspected under 5000K LED lighting. Runs, orange peel, or uncured spots are reworked.
